The oath and covenant of the priesthood

It is in Doctrine and Covenants 84:33–44. The oath is the Father’s promise. The covenant is the promise you make. Young men should understand this before they are ordained to the Melchizedek Priesthood.

Young women do not receive this oath. This page explains the covenant young men make when they receive the Melchizedek Priesthood.

The short version

  1. I promise to be faithful in obtaining the Aaronic and Melchizedek Priesthoods, to magnify my calling, and to live by every word of God.
  2. God swears that if I do, I will be sanctified by the Spirit, become an heir of the blessings of Abraham, and receive all that the Father has.

Doctrine and Covenants 84:33–34, 38–40, 43–44. The Aaronic Priesthood is received by covenant. The Melchizedek Priesthood is received by oath and covenant. Guide to the Scriptures

Open one passage at a time. The words in quotes are the scripture.

84:33 — Faithful, both priesthoods, magnify

“Whoso is faithful unto the obtaining these two priesthoods … and the magnifying their calling, are sanctified by the Spirit unto the renewing of their bodies.” Your part is to obtain both priesthoods and magnify your calling. The Lord’s promise is sanctification by the Spirit unto the renewing of your body.

84:34 — Moses, Aaron, Abraham, the elect

“They become the sons of Moses and of Aaron and the seed of Abraham, and the church and kingdom, and the elect of God.” The Church’s priesthood manual explains this as the privilege of administering the ordinances of salvation, and as receiving the blessings promised to Abraham and his seed.

84:35–38 — The chain of receiving

“He that receiveth my servants receiveth me. And he that receiveth me receiveth my Father. And he that receiveth my Father receiveth my Father’s kingdom; therefore all that my Father hath shall be given unto him.”

84:39–40 — Oath and covenant, and who swears

“This oath and covenant of my Father, which he cannot break, neither can it be moved.” The Guide to the Scriptures says the Aaronic Priesthood is received by covenant alone. The Melchizedek Priesthood is received by unspoken oath as well as by covenant.

84:41 — “Altogether turneth therefrom”

“Whoso breaketh this covenant after he hath received it, and altogether turneth therefrom, shall not have forgiveness of sins in this world nor in the world to come.” The 2017 Doctrine and Covenants Student Manual says this is a complete turning away, without repentance. It forfeits the blessings of exaltation. It is not automatically the sin against the Holy Ghost. President Marion G. Romney taught that failing to magnify a calling is not, by itself, the unpardonable sin.

84:43–44 — The commandment that follows

“I now give unto you a commandment … to give diligent heed to the words of eternal life. For you shall live by every word that proceedeth forth from the mouth of God.”

Good practice tips:

  • You can say the two promises in the box at the top of this page.
  • You can name what you covenant to do, and what the Lord promises in return.
  • You can explain Doctrine and Covenants 84:41.
  • You know the office you would be ordained to, and a duty of that office.

Your bishop and stake president decide when you are ordained. A brother who will serve a teaching mission away from home must receive the Melchizedek Priesthood before he is set apart.
